Morecambe manager Jim Harvey will be a happy man after his team returned home with all three points.
His resilient side thwarted Stevenage at every opportunity and then performed a smash and grab in scoring the winner at the start of the second half and then holding on.
This was a classic game of two halves with Stevenage dominating the first half and then falling away poorly in the second.
At half-time you were left wondering how Borough had failed to score as chances were peppered at the Morecambe goal, although Shrimps keeper Craig Mawson emerged as the visitors' hero on several occasions.
Stevenage strikers Anthony Elding and Justin Richards both had efforts on goal that went close and the attacking midfield play of Dean Brennan and youngster George Boyd was at times superb, but still that elusive strike would not come.
Time and time again Borough attacked but Mawson was equal to everything thrown at him. Morecambe too had their chances but these tended to be from short sharp snaps at goal rather than through steady build up play.
Both Wayne Curtis and David Perkins produced fine shots at the home goal but keeper Mark Westhead did well to save both efforts.
As the half drew to a close Elding found himself in space on the edge of the box and his powerful shot was only parried by Mawson. With Richards rushing in to tap into the empty net he was clearly impeded by Perkins, but the referee chose to ignore the incident with Perkins escaping an inevitable red card.
It was to have a profound effect on the game.
A few minutes into the second period a fine run down the left wing by Perkins saw him dance past the over committed Nathan Bunce and square for Kieron Walmsley to slot the ball home past Wetshead from ten yards out.
Steveange though were not stung into action and the second period turned into a non-event. Morecambe looked to kill the game dead and Stevenage had no answers to give.
Perkins was once again lucky to stay on the field when tugging Elding's shirt when he was clean through on goal and Boyd had a shot deflected onto the post from long range.
All in all though Stevenage will regret not making more of their numerous first-half chances and Morecambe may consider themselves lucky to pick up all three points.
