Forest Green's relegation from the Nationwide Conference was secured as they went down to a Morecombe side who moved up to fourth in the table.
Alan Lewer's side gave it their all but in the end in-form Morecambe proved too strong.
The home side - with four wins from their last five games – are real play-off candidates but started slowly and Forest Green produced football of a standard that belied their lowly league position.
Once again it took the skill of Michael Twiss to give the Shrimps the advantage when he scored a stunning opener on 26 minutes.
After winning a free-kick 25 yards out, David Perkins laid the ball sideways and Twiss let fly with a screamer that gave Dean Williams no chance.
Forest Green hit back and came close to scoring an equaliser on several occasions.
Defender Matthew Gadsby was unlucky to volley just over the bar from the edge of the area and young striker Lewis Haldane was denied only by an excellent save from Morecambe keeper Ryan Robinson.
Midfielder Andy Harris then saw a right-foot shot flash across the Morecambe goal before the home side extended their advantage with a breakaway goal on 69 minutes.
Garry Hunter robbed Hugh McAuley of possession in the middle of the park and played in Wayne Curtis who slid a left-foot shot under the approaching Williams.
Once again the visitors battled back bravely with Robert Gill heading Des Lyttle's quickly taken free-kick just over before substitute Charlie Griffin scored his 17th of the season after a neat one-two with McAuley.
Forest Green then pushed the Shrimps all the way and had them on the ropes before defender Paul Warhurst sliced an attempted clearance and gifted Gary Thompson a third Morecambe goal in injury time.
