Morecambe rode their luck to seal their first win in five League Two games as they recorded a double over the Bees.
Brentford had two goals disallowed and also missed a penalty as their miserable run of results continued on a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.
Morecambe took advantage of their good fortune to score three goals for the first time in 2008 and finally move off the 50-point mark.
The game may have ended as a thriller but the opening stages were tepid with neither side finding any fluency.
But with 25 minutes gone the afternoon burst into life as Morecambe pushed forward with Michael Twiss forcing Simon Brown into a good save with a shot from inside the box and Matty Blinkhorn heading over a good Garry Thompson right-wing cross.
Morecambe's pressure paid off with an opening goal on 31 minutes when Stewart Drummond scored his second goal in three goals after diverting another Thompson cross past Brown at the near post.
Brentford hit back with Glenn Poole seeing a 34th minute penalty saved by Scott Davies before they equalised three minutes before the break when Nathan Elder's volley from the edge of the area flew past the stranded Davies.
Morecambe began the second half sharply and regained the lead on 53 minutes. Carl Baker was the provider with a superb throughball for Thompson to run on to and place a shot past the helpless Brown.
The Bees hit back again with Poole's wonderful effort from the edge of the area hitting the post before Alan Connell was unfortunate to see a goal rubbed out for offside after he pounced on a Davies block.
To make matters worse for Brentford they were hit on the break with three minutes to go when Thompson again provided the danger with a cross which Garry Hunter headed past Brown.
Brave Brentford fought to the death but both Wayne Brown and Elder were denied late goals by excellent Davies saves.
