Morecambe took the spoils in an entertaining top of the table Lancashire derby clash against Accrington Stanley.
Michael Twiss led the way with a brace as the Shrimps edged past a Stanley side who played the vast majority of the game with only ten men after Chris Butler's third minute sending off.
Butler saw red after challenging Gary Thompson on the edge of the area with a decision that infuriated Stanley boss John Coleman.
But despite being a man down Accrington gave as good as they got as they looked to clinch their sixth successive victory.
David Brown twice came close for the visitors in the opening ten minutes as Stanley enjoyed the majority of the possession.
But it was Twiss who had the first clear chance of the game when put through by Danny Carlton on 16 minutes but the striker failed to take advantage with a weak shot straight at Darren Randolph.
The Shrimps' star striker wasn't to be denied for long however and he opened the scoring just after the half hour. Wayne Curtis crafted the opening with a neat throughball for Twiss to run on to and drill a sweetly struck left-foot shot past Randolph's right hand.
Despite the setback Stanley continued to attack. Ian Craney latched on to a Paul Mullin lay off to fire a left-foot shot on goal that was superbly saved by Ryan Robinson.
David Brown was then inches away from converting Mullin's left-wing cross and Gary Roberts saw a free-kick saved by Robinson at full stretch before the visitors pulled a goal back in first-half injury time when Craney's free-kick from 20 yards out was deflected past the Morecambe keeper.
The Shrimps only began to make their advantage pay at the start of the second half with Carlton missing two excellent chances before Twiss restored the lead with a second after volleying fiercely past Randolph from eight yards out.
From there Curtis saw a shot cleared off the line by Robbie Williams and Thompson produced a stinging free-kick that whistled inches over.
The home side made their pressure pay with a third on 72 minutes. The Stanley defence was caught flat-footed by a Garry Hunter throughball for Thompson. His shot was cleared off the line again by Mike Flynn but Carlton was on hand to slot home the rebound.
There was still more action, and controversy to come however. Accrington were awarded the softest of penalties when Jim Bentley was ruled to have fouled Mullin and Peter Cavanagh slotted home the spot kick to set up a tense finale.
Despite the pressure Morecambe held on and made it three wins in succession to move closer to the top of the Conference table.
