Morecambe made it six points from six over the Christmas period with a convincing victory over Southport in one of the most one-sided Conference derbies between these two sides for some time.
Adriano Rigoglioso was the Shrimps' star man with two goals on 52 and 78 minutes, goals that came after Wayne Curtis had put Morecambe ahead in the 12th minute from a cross by Rigoglioso.
Morecambe were simply a class above Southport in the first period and it came as no surprise when Curtis sidefooted home his 11th goal of the season after just 12 minutes.
From there Morecambe looked intent on quickly adding to their lead and they were denied a second on 21 minutes when Neil Gibson cleared a Michael Stringfellow header off the line following a Rigoglioso corner.
Lee Elam almost got on the end of a far-post cross before forcing keeper Steve Dickinson into a sharp save at his near post.
It took Southport 25 minutes to record their first corner and they almost took full advantage only to see skipper Steve Soley miss the ball completely with the goal at his mercy.
Three minutes later Southport produced a rare moment of inspiration when Andy Scott let fly with a 30-yard volley that was heading for the top right-hand corner before it was flicked over the bar by Craig Mawson.
The home sideÂ’s dominance continued in the second period and Rigoglioso made it 2-0 on 52 minutes with a sweet left-foot finish past Dickinson from the edge of the area.
The now rampant midfielder sent Dickinson scrambling to his left to produce a fine save on 66 minutes, but the Southport keeper could do nothing to prevent MorecambeÂ’s third 12 minutes from time.
After a good run from Stringfellow, the ball came to Gary Thompson and his lay-off was perfect for Rigoglioso to sidefoot home his second of the afternoon.
