Accrington Stanley boss John Coleman returned to the ground where he made his name as a top striker and saw his side take a well-deserved three points.

After only winning two away games all season, Coleman was understandably delighted to see his side take the spoils at a ground Morecambe had turned into something of a fortress.

In the last two seasons Jim Harvey's team had lost just three league games at home, but on this occasion they never recovered from a shocking start when Ian Craney gave the visitors and early lead.

With just seven minutes played Craney, a summer signing from Altrincham, let fly with a 25-yard drive that screamed into the top right-hand corner.

Morecambe failed to make any real inroads into that deficit and it was Stanley who looked the more threatening going forward.

They were rewarded with a second goal ten minutes from the break when with their first corner of the game, defender Robbie Williams steamed in unmarked to head home from six yards out.

Accrington should have had a third on 67 minutes when Paul Mullin broke through but was denied by an excellent save from Adam Sollitt.

Morecambe then were given a glimmer of hope when they pulled one back 12 minutes from time with skipper Jim Bentley bundling home a Kieron Walmsley free-kick.

Accrington were then made to defend desperately as Morecambe pushed forward, but it was the visitors who nearly added another goal when Steve Jagielka latched on to Michael Howard's backpass, but he was again denied by the sharp Sollitt.
