Chester City moved to the top of the Nationwide Conference after this narrow 1-0 victory over Morecambe.

Daryl Clare was Chester's hero with the only goal of the game on 76 minutes, which gave Chester the three vital points in their push for the Conference title.

It was also the goal which saw Morecambe crash to their first home league defeat since August 2002.

On that occasion Yeovil were the side to beat the Shrimps and they lifted the title. Chester boss Mark Wright will be hoping to follow that this year and on this performance there is no reason why that should not be the case.

Chester's strength is their solid defence, which once again proved formidable.

Morecambe were reduced to just three good chances. The first came on 33 minutes when a Wayne Curtis left-foot drive hit the foot of the post before Ian McCaldon saved superbly from a Danny Carlton volley just two minutes later.

Morecambe then only really threatened in the final stages when Chester's substitute goalkeeper Wayne Brown saved from Jim Bentley's close-range header.

Chester provided few moments of joy up front themselves with Clare and Ben Davies shooting straight at Morecambe keeper Craig Mawson in the first half.

As a result the winning goal came as something of a shock. A deep cross from Jon Brady found Darryn Stamp at the far post and his header across goal was met by the sliding Clare to give Chester a vital victory.
