Mark Byrne staked an early claim for League Two goal of the season as Barnet beat Morecambe 1-0 at the Globe Arena.
Bees captain Anwar Uddin tried an audacious effort in the opening exchanges but miscued his overhead kick.
Stewart Drummond was gifted a chance for Morecambe but hooked a shot over the crossbar after a defensive mix-up by the Bees.
Izak Reid thought he had found a route to goal early in the second half but Clovis Kamdjo made a superb last-ditch challenge for Barnet when the striker shaped to shoot, before Phil Jevons saw his shot claimed comfortably by Dean Brill.
Seconds later Izale McLeod, Barnet's top scorer last year, had a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring but his volley clipped the top of the bar.
However the deadlock was broken in the 76th minute when Byrne found space 35 yards from goal and unleashed a strike into the top corner. The Bees then shut up shop to cling onto a hard-fought three points from their opening fixture.
