Morecambe's play-off hopes took a battering at Stonebridge Road as Gravesend & Northfleet seized control of this encounter in a 13-minute spell at the start of the second half.
During that period they scored four goals, which when added to the two before the interval was a record win for the Fleet in non-league's top division.
Manager Andy Ford had called for a performance to reward Gravesend's long-suffering home fans and with added competition for places from his recent recruits the established players rose to the task.
Man of the match was midfielder Andrew Drury, who very nearly didn't last beyond the first minute. A high challenge by Shaun Garnett left him with a rib injury, but despite that he continued and proved to be the inspiration.
Steve Perkins opened the scoring on 13 minutes. A cross from Lee Gledhill found the midfielder unmarked and he managed to squeeze his header under the body of Morecambe goalkeeper Craig Mawson.
In an even first half Morecambe had several good chances to draw level. Terry McFlynn was wide on two occasions and Jim Bentley was guilty of failing to find the target with an unmarked header from a McFlynn corner.
Gravesend's second goal during added time in the first period proved to be a catalyst for the second-half goal explosion.
Drury beat the offside trap down the left flank before showing off his box of tricks. A delicate cross from the left was perfectly placed for Rob Owen to stoop low and head home at the back post.
Even the die-hard fans would have dreamed about the Fleet's second-half showing.
On 51 minutes Roy Essandoh, probably in his last appearance, burst through and tried to squeeze the ball in from a narrow angle.
Mawson blocked the initial effort and the ball fell loose to James Pinnock who tucked it home from two yards home out.
A minute later it was 4-0. Mawson brought down a charging Owen as the Fleet midfielder burst through the pack. With the referee awarding the spot-kick, Drury stepped up to wrongfoot Mawson.
With confidence now running high, the influential Drury created the fifth goal just two minutes later. He beat Morecambe's David Perkins to cross for Steve Perkins, who headed home his second of the game.
The rout was completed within the hour as a shell-shocked Morecambe defence provided Pinnock with a misplaced pass and the Fleet striker strode on with confidence to slot home for the sixth and final time.
The visitors should have registered on the scoresheet despite the game being over as a contest, but when the opportunity arose it was duly spurned. Lee Shearer's shanked clearance fell neatly to Shrimps sub Ryan Sugden, only for him to spoon it into the arms of Fleet keeper Paul Wilkerson.
Sugden spurned another great chance from Danny Carlton's cross, but by then one sensed that Lady Luck was the one person missing when the team coach had left Lancashire.
With two new signings in midweek, Gravesend manager Ford expressed satisfaction with the overall balance of his squad. But, he was more pleased for the fans at the final whistle.
"We took our chances very well. We've worked hard on a game plan in midweek and it paid off."
