Cody McDonald snatched a last-minute equaliser against Morecambe to extend promotion-chasing Gillingham's unbeaten run to 16 games with a 1-1 draw.
Morecambe took a shock lead through Phil Jevons' controversial first-half penalty but despite piling on the pressure Gillingham had to wait until the dying stages for McDonald to pounce with his 24th goal of the season.
Despite their early dominance, Gillingham fell behind on 20 minutes when Matt Lawrence was adjudged to have handled in the area when jostling for possession with Jevons.
Lawrence was booked for his protests to referee Danny McDermid and Jevons kept his nerve to send Alan Julian the wrong way from the spot.
The Gills responded by turning up the heat but found goalkeeper Barry Roche in inspired form as he kept out efforts from Barry Fuller, Kevin Maher and Adebayo Akinfenwa.
After the break it was more of the same as McDonald went desperately close with an overhead kick before Danny Spiller wasted a glorious chance from ten yards out.
Just when it seemed as if Gillingham's play-off hopes would take a major dent, Nutter's cross found McDonald at the back post and he headed home.
