Frankie Artus scored with a superb 30-yard effort to give the visitors a draw and leave McIlroy full of praise.
He said: "I thought it was a great game of football that could have gone either way.
"Both teams played some really good football and I think a draw was a fair result overall.
"We are obviously disappointed not to have held on to the lead but their strike was a world class effort and sometimes you just have to give the other side credit.
"The good thing for us was that we looked solid throughout and if we play like that between now and the rest of the season we will do well. We have made a few changes to the squad in the last week or so but the new lads have done really well and are settling in nicely."
