The 56-year-old was left so frustrated after the Shrimps' 3-1 defeat at Plainmoor at the end of October that he thought long and hard about resigning after six defeats in 13 games.
McIlroy told the Morecambe Visitor: "We started the game really well and were well on top when a few decisions went against us and we had a man sent off.
"Everything seemed to go against us and after we ended the game with nine men I was at a real low.
"I seriously thought about calling it a day but I chatted with my family and the chairman over the weekend and they showed their support which meant a lot."
